chapter 18
The picture to the left is February, Life in the Country, Tres Riches Heures. The Limbourg Brothers created a calendar that had holy days. They made full page illustrations for the calendar. In the February page at the top the calendar has zodiac symbols in addition to the illustration at the bottom. It reminds me of how we can use the zodiac symbols to look at our horoscopes today. It also reminded me of how we have calendars now that have specific dates marked down for special holidays or when the full moon is. There are so many designs for calendars now-a-days and people can even make their own designs and use their own pictures if they want. It also reminded me of my religion and how we have different types of calendars that have all the holy days marked on it as well. I know my mom uses it to know when to perform certain ceremonies and traditions. I think each culture and time period have their own ways of knowing certain days and events and they are all unique.
I like how their calendar had zodiac symbols on the top. I think it looks a lot more interesting than todays calendar where one side has a picture and the other is just boxes for the days of the month. It makes their calendar look more artistic.
ReplyDeleteIts amazing that people look at art in different ways, I also posted this painting, but with a different undersanding. I really enjoyed your description as it wasn't what I saw.It made me go wow... :)
ReplyDeleteI also agree with what Brittney said, this calendar is so much more interesting than the traditional format that we use today. So much time/thought/effort went into this piece, which makes it very unique. There are a lot of symbols throughout that carry hidden meanings.
ReplyDeleteI love the detail in this picture, the calander makes things so intresting and also make me think of how easy we have things now. For us we just flip a page and the numbers are all there everything is marked for us as far as holidays and full moons, etc. This painting makes things seem so simple but complex at the same time.
ReplyDeleteHey There
ReplyDeleteYou are right each culture has its own calander. This piece is created in international gothic style. In which horizons are set high and lanscape is smaller in proportion to humanscale.
