chapter 19: blog 3

This is the painting "Birth of Venus". It has a lot of important detail. I think this is an interesting painting because it shows a mythological figure and as the reading says it represents the idea of divine love and its based on an antique statue type which is known as the "modest Venus". Also in the reading it says that this painting has been interpreted as the birth of the idea of beauty. Maybe the people looked to this painting to see what beauty is. It kind of reminds me of how in our times now there are magazines with pictures of models and things like that for people to look at and see what the definition of beauty is. The media portrays someone who is super skinny and tall and whatever else as beautiful and people try to be like that because that may be the trend now.

  1. hi aditi
I S2 the point you bring about the definition of beauty. This painting is truely a huge contrast to today's models or actresses. Here Venus is so modest and humble, not even noticing the fact that she's being adorned... opposed to now days, the girls that are seen as attractive (at least the ones popular to boys) are far from humble. They're all out there in your face & put much effort into calling our attention. They knoww they're hot & work it. verry opposite
i posted an entry similar to this topic in art 1a before: http://stariisurpriseart1awinter09.blogspot.com/2009/01/this-is-woman-of-willdendorf.html

  2. Your comparison to our ideal of beauty today versus in the past is spot on! In generations past a full figured woman was seen as healthy and capable of birthing healthy, living children. It is so sad that todays society views woman who are emaciated and sickly as beautiful. Think of what kind of message this sends to the young women of today. We have a lot to learn from the art of the past.

  3. I agree with everyone else, and thought your comparison of beauty then versus today was very accurate as well as interesting. I think that the media today is sending a horrible view of body image to women & youth. Being "healthy" does not mean that you need to be super thin. I think it is important to have role models like Oprah and other full figured women to voice the truth about beauty. As long as you are comfortable with yourself, you will exude confidence & beauty on the outside.
